Core Web Vitals Explained: How Website Speed Affects Rankings

Published by SeekRankTech

Google uses Core Web Vitals as part of its page experience signals. They measure how fast your main content appears, how quickly the page responds to input, and how stable the layout is while it loads.

LCP — Largest Contentful Paint

LCP measures how long the biggest visible element takes to render. Aim for under 2.5 seconds. Pre-rendered HTML, optimised images and self-hosted fonts make the biggest difference.

INP — Interaction to Next Paint

INP captures how responsive your page feels when people click, tap or type. Keep it under 200 ms by shipping less JavaScript and avoiding long tasks on the main thread.

CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift

CLS tracks unexpected movement. Reserve space for images and embeds, and avoid injecting content above what people are reading. Target a score below 0.1.

The quick wins

Static rendering, modern image formats, font subsetting and removing unused scripts often move a site from red to green in a single sprint.
